About This Site…

Me!GGW is the creation of me, Matt Mayes. I currently operate the web development company Stop Time Studio. I’ve has been professionally engaged in the web since the late 90’s, ever since I created a website to help document my rock band’s trip to Europe. I now play in Jazz Conspiracy and do some side-man gigs in and around Chicago.

The goal of this site is to discuss web oriented things that are “good” based on my experience. For like-minded developers, this may mean sharing code/practices that have proven useful. For non-developers, this may mean learning more about search engines, including how to Google things more effectively and quickly, or how to start a blog. I don’t tend to write about actual design much, even though I primarily started my web career as a designer. But nowadays, I only design for a handful of clients, and spend most of my days on the code/data aspects of development.

A bit of history: I started working in fast food at age 16. Since then, I’ve been a pizza deliverer, shipper, shipping manager, telemarketer (dark days…), professional paper shredder, and a technical writer.

What’s With the Name?

GiveGoodWeb.com is meant to be a bit silly. Of course, exactly what is “good web” is up to the individual. But when you put up a blog/website, your inspiration tends to be what is interesting to you. In my opinion, as long as you are doing that, you’re giving good web. And along those lines, I’m putting my “cook book” out there as a resource to help do just that.

Under some articles I will put a footnote about what is “good” about the topic, or more generally, what the take-away from the post might be as far as applying it to your own site.

What’s With the Coffee Mug?

Whether I’m surfing or writing code, a coffee mug tends to be nearby.

Thanks for Aynsley Floyd for the great picture!
